Window replacement in San Antonio

Here's how a window case can go in San Antonio. At its March 20, 2026 meeting, the City's Historic Compliance and Technical Advisory Board took up a request to swap 10 historic one-over-one wood windows on a West Mulberry Avenue house for aluminum-clad wood. Staff backed replacing three of them with a product that meets the City's specifications for wood window replacement and recommended repairing the other seven. If a sash turned out to be rotted beyond repair, the owner could bring it back to staff, one window at a time. The board denied the request.

At the same meeting, the board denied a plan to replace all the historic wood windows on an East Carolina Street house with aluminum. Staff wanted the original or salvaged wood windows put back, with the original trim and sill detail restored. Both requests came in as applications for a Certificate of Appropriateness.

Hail is the other San Antonio story. On April 12, 2016, a storm dropped a swath of very large hail just north of downtown, with multiple reports of 2- to 3-inch stones and one of 4.5 inches southeast of Helotes. Less than two weeks later, on April 25, another storm moved north across the west side of the city with hail that grew to the size of baseballs near Shavano Park. Glass doesn't win against stones like that.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo shows us the window type and material, but a local pro who measures each opening will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is window replacement priced?
Mostly by the window — the number of windows times a per-window price for the material and size. Tell us how many you’re replacing and we’ll do the math.
What if I only photograph one window?
That’s fine for the per-window price, but we can’t count your whole house from one photo. Pop in how many windows you want done and the ballpark gets a lot tighter.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A clear shot of a typical window — inside or out — plus a note on how many you’re replacing.
