Fence or deck in Ogden

In Ogden's East Central neighborhoods, chain link is on its way out of front yards. City code bars it in the front setback and in the street-facing side yard of a corner lot. If you already had chain link there as of July 31, 2010, you can keep it but not add to it. When it's replaced, the new fence has to be wood, decorative metal, vinyl or a hedge, and brick or stone columns are allowed.

Across residential zones, the height limit is four feet in front yards and seven feet in side and rear yards. A corner lot can have a six-foot fence in the street-side yard if it's behind the house. If a neighbor's driveway is within ten feet of your shared line, you have to leave a clear-view triangle with ten-foot legs where that line meets the street.

On a hillside or a retaining wall, Ogden measures height from a point halfway between the high side and the low side.

The city's land use permit for a fence is free, and the drawing you submit shows location, height and material. Masonry or concrete over six feet also needs a building permit. In the Eccles, Jefferson or 25th Street historic districts, ask the Landmarks Commission, set up in 1980, whether your fence needs a Certificate of Historic Appropriateness.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
