Fence or deck in Salt Lake City

If your house is in one of Salt Lake City's local historic districts, a new fence starts with the Planning Division, not the lumber yard. The city's fence guide says a Certificate of Appropriateness is always required there. The historic preservation office adds that any exterior change in a local district, or on a locally designated landmark site, needs planning approval.

Outside those districts, you still need paperwork. The same guide says a building permit is required before you build any fence or wall, so the city can check zoning and structural safety. You apply online, upload a site plan showing the fence's location and height, and call for an inspection when it's up.

Two things raise the bar. A fence or wall over seven feet, where one is allowed, or any masonry or concrete wall, needs construction plans that show the reinforcement and the foundation. And if you live in the Foothills Residential or Foothills Protection districts, extra standards apply on top of the city's main fence section.

The city measures height from the finished grade of the property the fence serves. One more note: Salt Lake City amended its fence rules in 2026 and says updated guides are coming, so confirm which version your plan will be reviewed under.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
