Fence or deck in Toledo

Toledo is specific about what a fence can be made of. In a residential zone, it has to be built from materials made for fencing. Pallets, old doors, tires, corrugated metal and tree trunks are all out. Wood posts have to be treated lumber.

Every fence needs a certificate of zoning compliance from the city. Small repairs don't, if you're replacing 100 square feet or less with matching material. Front-yard fences top out at three and a half feet. Side and back fences can be six.

Corner lots catch people. A corner lot has two front yards, so both street sides get the shorter limit. Your back yard is the one opposite the side of the house with your street address.

Pools bring their own fence. An in-ground pool has to be at least eight feet from the property lines, inside a barrier fence at least four feet tall with gates that lock. An above-ground pool needs the same four-foot barrier, unless its own sides are four feet high and the ladder is removed or locked up when nobody's swimming. A deck built around a pool takes a building permit and a site plan review.

Questions homeowners ask

How accurate is a photo estimate?
It’s a ballpark, not a quote. A photo tells us a lot about the material and size, but a local pro who walks the yard will always be more precise. Use our number as the range to expect before you start calling around.
How is a fence priced versus a deck?
Fences are usually priced by the foot and decks by the square foot. We’ll ask one quick question to tell which you’re after, then size it from your photo and your answers.
Which materials can you estimate?
Wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal for fences; pressure-treated wood and composite for decks. Material is the single biggest price swing, so it’s worth picking the one you want.
Is this really free?
Yes. No signup, no credit card, no spam. We only make money if you choose to connect with a local pro — and that’s up to you.
What photo works best?
A wide shot of where the fence or deck will go — or of the old one you’re replacing — works best.
